7 Billion and you?

There is another interesting website showing us how big this world really is. On 7 Billion & Me you can see the current population of the world and you can put in your date and place of birth and your gender after clicking the “Get Started” button and they will tell you interesting things about:

  1. The Entire History of the World
  2. The Day You Were Born
  3. Since You Were Born
  4. Considering Your Age

In these headings you get answers to the following questions:

  1. How many people were born before you?
  2. How many people have been alive when you were born?
How many of them lived in cities?
What was there gender and age structure?
  3. How many people were born/died since you were born?
    Structural answers (see No.2)
How many species of all known species have become extinct since you were born?
  4. Where are you on a global scale of age?
How old have you been or will you be at the “billion-steps” of population growth?

Sea Monster of Bondi BeachThese interesting statistics are also provided for the continent, the country and the city where you were born or where you live now if you answered these questions in the form at the beginning.

The website was created by the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) and the purpose is to put people in perspective to the rest of the world and create a better understanding that although this world is big every individual makes choices which influence the world. One of there main statements illustrates this importance:

“Whether we can all live together on a healthy planet depends on the individual choices and decisions we make now. In a world of 7 billion people, and counting, we need to be able to count on each other.”

By the way. During I wrote this post the worlds population grew by 15.000.
